Vital Friends

We spend most of our energy and time on self-improvement. From very early in our lives, we start going to school trying to acquire important skills and perfect our expertise. In college, we focus on specializing in our field of choice and everything is basically converged onto personal development and proficiency.

However, it seems that throughout our academic life not enough attention is paid to teaching us the basic skills in what seems to be a crucial point for a life of success and fulfillment -- relationships. Even though we must strive to become our best as individuals, we also have to realize that we would be nothing without the important people that surrounds us. Our relationships are the fuel we have to continue our path in life. They provide us with feedback, support, encouragement, a kick in the rear and insight. And sometimes (to be kind), we lack the fundamental skills of how to make these relationships work.

Vital Friends: The People You Can’t Afford to Live Without by Tom Rath is a simple but effective book that highlights the central role that relationships play in our lives and gives us some basic points on how to find and deepen these vital connections. A short and enlightening read!
